Stopping Book WasteAnd Changing Lives

Book ownership is the single biggest indicator of a child’s life outcomes, yet nearly one million children across the UK own no books of their own.

Throughout 2025 Dukes Foundation is supporting the Children’s Book Project to directly tackle book poverty, and in doing so to support the language, literacy, emotional and social development of thousands of young people nationwide.

The Children’s Book Project will gift over 600k carefully presented, new and preloved books this year to schools, food banks, community groups and women’s groups that each support children living in the most challenging circumstances.  Every setting will use these books to put on a highly engaging free book festival at which children can choose books they feel excited about, to take home, to keep and to share with their family.

Throughout 2025 Dukes Foundation will invite children and young people across all our schools to bring in the books they’ve grown out of.  It’s a simple, but incredibly powerful way of impacting the lives of children across our wider communities and of celebrating our wonderful reading community.
