Ebony Horse Club was established in 1996 to support young people in Brixton to develop key life skills and improve both physical and holistic health through access to horses. They provide young people with the opportunity to experience the benefits of horse riding on their doorstep, making equestrianism accessible in the fullest sense of the term.
They are not your ordinary youth club, or riding school! They are a youth club with horses. Established 28 years ago by local residents in the heart of Brixton, Ebony Horse Club has been working tirelessly ever since to support local children who need them most. Their goal is to make the equestrian industry accessible in the fullest sense of the term and ensure access to the sport is equitable. They work with around 180 young people per week across a variety of programmes offering in excess of 4500 hours of support a year. Working with local schools and providing afterschool and weekend provision year round, they are able to support young people to remain in education, improve their overall sense of wellbeing and develop life-long support networks. 95% of their young people come from low income backgrounds and approximately 45% have a diagnosed additional need.
They believe that young people should not be restricted by their environment or socio-economic status to achieve their full potential which is why their programmes are all free to access. They place a keen focus on breaking cycles of poverty and ensuring young people can move into meaningful employment, Further Education or apprenticeships by the time they graduate from their services and with roughly 43% of local children living in poverty, access to charities like theirs is more crucial than ever. Over the last decade they have seen young people achieve great things, and hope to see many more achieve their dreams.
